I believe that solving problems is at the core of being an architect, but what differentiates it from other disciplines is the ability to do so in a creative way that adds beauty to function.
Marc Gordon has always been drawn to two fields that typically seem at odds: art and science. He ultimately pursued architecture because it granted him permission to flex both his analytical and creative muscles.
With more than 20 years under his belt at Spacesmith, Marc oversees a diverse cross section of the firm’s portfolio, including workplace, non-profit, education, and retail projects as well as ground-up architecture. He genuinely enjoys coordinating with consultants in the field and several decades of experience enable him to nimbly address the needs of varying scopes and requirements.
Marc operates on the belief that architectural elements cannot be considered in isolation, but rather as a sum of their parts. With this guiding principle in mind, he conducts extensive research on codes, product specifications, and local history for every project. His designs are further informed by his knowledge of building science, leading to energy-efficient projects that meet high standards for performance, sustainability, and indoor environmental quality. As advisor to Spacesmith’s Building Science & Technology committee, he leads the studio’s engagement with the ever-changing world of design software.
Marc’s resume includes adaptive reuse projects such as the headquarters for Brooklyn Bridge Park, housed in a historic building on the borough’s waterfront. His commitment to quality assurance and sustainability is evidenced by his LEED Gold-certified design for the NYPD Tow Pound, recipient of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Building Brooklyn Award.
In his free time, Marc explores the city’s industrial and outlying neighborhoods, documenting the idiosyncrasies of the urban landscape through photography.
