Julian Laurier
Architecture is an expression of the community in which it lives and has tremendous power to incite positive change.
Julian Laurier is motivated every day by the opportunity to use architecture as a tool for uplifting and empowering communities.
While living in Seoul, South Korea, they developed the sensibility to curate spaces with a strong contextual awareness. Now, Julian's practice is shaped by their interest in research, sustainability, and community-driven design. These priorities have led to successful projects in the civic, cultural, and educational sectors.
Julian has a highly organized approach and a genuine care for the communities Spacesmith serves. Both qualities were instrumental in the completion of the SCO Genovese Family Life Center, a Brooklyn-based foster care center that opened in October 2022.
As a member of Spacesmith's design committee, Julian co-leads Out of the Box, a group that hosts firmwide workshops such as design charettes to help colleagues tune into their curiosity and creativity. They also foster connections in the firm through their work on the culture committee.
While earning their bachelor of architecture degree at CCNY, they published research work on plant-based dynamic filtration systems, greening Grand Goâve in Haiti, and the efficiency of building enclosures. In their spare time, Julian volunteers as a designer and mentor for OANY, NOMA, and the Architecture League.
