Hermès, French luxury fashion house established in 1837

Hermès of Paris enlisted Spacesmith as the executive architect for the renovation of a historic building in New York City's Meatpacking District to house a new boutique. Building on our long-standing partnership with the luxury brand, our team worked once again with Hermès’ Paris-based design architect, RDAI, as they expanded their approach to appeal to a younger audience.

Drawing inspiration from the neighborhood’s industrial past, our design pays homage to the area’s heritage. The façade of the landmark building has been meticulously restored, retaining its original ironwork and yellow brick, which connect seamlessly to the cobblestone street that leads to the store entrance.

The first floor showcases silks, ties, leather goods, fashion accessories, and perfumes. Thoughtfully designed open displays and ample seating create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, allowing customers the rare opportunity to interact with merchandise typically kept in glass cases.

Toward the back of the floor is a new addition to Hermès locations in New York: a café serving coffee and wine, with a communal table, charging stations, and magazines for guests to enjoy.

An elegant, open staircase leads to the second floor, where customers will find the ready-to-wear collections for men and women, along with jewelry, watches, home décor, shoes, and equestrian gear. A restored skylight filters natural light throughout the space, adding to the ambiance.

The material palette seamlessly blends the old and the new. Guests are welcomed by Hermès' signature ex-libris tile mosaic in warm toffee tones. The silver-gray cherry wood, a signature element in Hermès stores, has been sandblasted to enhance the industrial vibe of the Meatpacking District. Additionally, vibrant, handcrafted ceramic tiles adorn the coffee bar, bringing a burst of color to the space.
