School of Visual Arts Social Documentary Film
As part of an on-going relationship, School of Visual Arts (SVA) enlisted Spacesmith to design facilities for the Social Documentary Film Department (Soc Doc), a new MFA program launched in Fall 2009. The design solution for Soc Doc, which is located in the storefront of a Chelsea building owned by SVA, establishes a link between NYC street-life and the department's activities. An intimate screening auditorium, edit rooms, classrooms and student gathering spaces punched with bright red benches provide the laboratory for future Soc Doc film makers. The prominent circulation path that butts against the glass façade and rings the programmatic spaces creates a sense of transparency to the street. The space is branded with 'SVA' carved in bamboo slats and full size movie posters.
