School of Visual Arts Design for Social Innovation

SVA Design for Social Innovation is a two year graduate program that provides students with the design tools and skills needed to become creative leaders in Social Innovation. The teaching approach to for this program is based on full collaboration, therefore the 5000 sf floor had to be flexible and open to meet the faculty’s and student’s needs. At the heart of the design is a circular 55 seat auditorium equipped with audio visual capabilities for presentations, lectures and symposiums. The interior of the curved wall is clad in perforated gypsum board panels and the outer walls of the auditorium are finished with magnetic paint that accommodates interchangeable graphics and also function as white boards, chalkboards and bulletin boards. The “playroom”, an open plan multifunction space, partially rings the auditorium and is equipped with moveable desks that foster collaboration and interactive learning. The design also includes a quiet room for study, a computer lab, sound booth for podcasts and an eat-in pantry that doubles as an open teaching space.
